Investigations Intensify for Operation "Wide Reciever", the 2006 Predecessor to "Fast and Furious"

The Examiner
Luke Witman

Southern Arizona arms dealers accused
to knowingly selling weapons to
Mexican gun smugglers.
With the dust still far from settled on the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives' failed Mexican arms smuggling sting Operation Fast and Furious, the Justice Department is intensifying its investigation into a similar ATF-led operation that took place in Tucson in 2006. Dubbed Operation Wide Receiver, in this precursor to Fast and Furious, agents allegedly allowed guns to pass from Southern Arizona arms dealers and into the hands of Mexican criminals, in a larger attempt to get to the leaders of the drug cartels.

The Justice Department investigation into Operation Wide Receiver began in 2006, when a local resident tipped off authorities that Tucson gun dealer Michael Detty was supplying guns to Mexican criminals. However, it was not until May of 2010 that an indictment was issued against Detty and his business Mad Dawg Global Marketing. The indictment alleges that Detty sold 269 weapons to criminals in Sonora, only 47 of which were eventually seized by ATF officials. This means that at least 222 firearms potentially reached the h [...]

US Aircraft Carrier USS George Washington May be Decommissioned Halfway Through Its Planned Lifespan

US Aircraft Carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73)

U.S. Navy May Cut Carrier's Life in Half To Save Money -- Defense News

Under heavy pressure to find real cuts, U.S. Navy officials are considering decommissioning a nuclear aircraft carrier halfway through its planned lifespan, two Pentagon sources said.

The USS George Washington's three-year-long refueling overhaul, scheduled to begin in 2016, would be canceled under the scheme, and the ship would be decommissioned as its reactor fuel ran out.

My Comment: Forget about having only 10 carrier groups in operation at the end of all of this budget cutting .... I will be surprised if there are 8 left when the final cuts are made.

Bank of England Governor: World Facing Worst Financial Crisis In History

Bank of England Governor Mervyn King

World Facing Worst Financial Crisis In History, Bank of England Governor Says -- The Telegraph

The world is facing the worst financial crisis since at least the 1930s "if not ever", the Governor of the Bank of England said last night.

Sir Mervyn King was speaking after the decision by the Bank's Monetary Policy Committee to put £75billion of newly created money into the economy in a desperate effort to stave off a new credit crisis and a UK recession.

Economists said the Bank's decision to resume its quantitative easing [QE], or asset purchase programme, showed it was increasingly fearful for the economy, and predicted more such moves ahead.

Sir Mervyn said the Bank had been driven by growing signs of a global economic disaster.

Harry Reid triggers the "nuclear option."

The "shocking development," reports The Hill, blocks Republicans "from forcing votes on uncomfortable amendments after the chamber has voted to move to final passage of a bill":
The Democratic leader had become fed up with Republican demands for votes on motions to suspend the rules after the Senate had voted to limit debate earlier in the day.

[Republican Leader Mitch] McConnell had threatened such a motion to force a vote on the original version of President Obama's jobs package, which many Democrats don't like because it would limit tax deductions for families earning over $250,000. The jobs package would have been considered as an amendment.

McConnell wanted to embarrass the president by demonstrating how few Democrats are willing to support his jobs plan as first drafted.

Stevie B, Owing $420K in Child Support, Arrested At Springfield Concert

Stevie B., singer of "Because I Love You" (The Postman Song) and other hits from the 80s and 90s, was arrested in Springfield this past Friday night after his concert at the MassMutual Center and hauled off to jail for an apparent child support debt, to a woman in Agawam, of a whopping $420,000.

According to the Springfield Republican, when Stevie B was apprehended as he was leaving the arena after his show, the arresting officer found him "cooperative but surprised by the arrest" and concerned "that he might miss a weekend gig in Providence, RI."

Stevie B. lives in Florida.  Did he forget about the child support he skipped out on here in Massachusetts? Did he think he was in the clear by now?

Hmmm, reminds me of another music celebrity, Bobby Brown.  He too was arrested several years back after returning to his native Massachusetts (from Georgia, in his case) to see his daughter cheerleading, and was hauled off to jail for huge back child support.  One of the lessons I derived from this story, as I blogged back then, was:

Pakistan diplomat rages on "how we have been treated"

CBS News
Pamela Falk

As Americans mark the 10th anniversary of the Afghanistan conflict, relations between Afghanistan and Pakistan and the U.S. and Pakistan are increasingly strained because of the violent attacks that the Haqqani network, a fierce militant group tied to al Qaeda and based in Pakistan, have brought to the Afghan insurgency, particularly attacks on U.S. troops.

American officials have asserted that Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence agency (ISI) has ties to the Taliban and to the Haqqani network, although U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta this week said Pakistan has been asked to take action against the Haqqani network where, he said, they take safe haven.

Several reports with dueling statistics reflect the challenges facing the Afghan government of President Hamid Karzai and the difficulties with the tiered handover of security from the NATO-led coalition to the Afghan police and army. The U.N. Secretary-General's recent report, "The situation in Afghanistan and its implications for international peace and security," says incidents involving armed clashes and improvised explosive devices were up 39 percent compared to the same time last year.
The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) cited a decrease of 2 percent, using different data, an estimated 25 percent fewer incidents than those recorded by the U.N. But both reports attributed around four-fift [...]

Fergie demands Anfield improvement

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson wants his side to improve on their recent bad run of results at Anfield - starting on Saturday.
The reigning English champions have lost their last three games against their bitter rivals at Anfield despite eclipsing them as the most successful team in English football with their 19th title last season.
Speaking ahead of the crunch match on Saturday, Ferguson admits his side have not enjoyed the best of results at Merseyside and wants to change that on Saturday.
"We've been poor there of late. A couple of times we've been outfought, which has been disappointing," he was quoted as saying in The Sun newspaper.

Joorabchian: Tevez was mistranslated

Carlos Tevez did not refuse to play for Manchester City in their Champions League defeat at Bayern Munich, according to his advisor Kia Joorabchian.
Carlos Tevez's advisor has insisted the striker did not refuse to play for Manchester City - and claimed that post-match comments by the player suggesting he had done so were mistranslated by a club interpreter.
Kia Joorabchian said the Argentina striker always went out of his way to play - even when injured. He also contrasted City manager Roberto Mancini's "very direct" style with that of Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger and claimed a number of top Premier League stars had "refused to play" in the summer.
Tevez is currently serving a two-week suspension pending a club investigation that he allegedly di [...]

Map Maker Graduation Part V: from Afghanistan to Antarctica

(Cross-posted on the Lat Long blog)

Google Map Maker enables local experts to create maps and share their local knowledge with the world. These citizen cartographers help keep maps of their areas accurate and up to date. They add missing roads and new businesses—and even map areas that have little to no data yet on Google Maps.

Today, our latest crop of countries, territories and an entire continent are graduating from Map Maker—meaning the user-generated maps of these countries will now appear on Google Maps: Afghanistan, Antarctica, Ecuador, Georgia, Guatemala, Heard Island and McDonald Islands, Honduras, Iraq, Norfolk Island, Saint Pierre & Miquelon and Saudi Arabia.

Here are some before and after pictures that highlight how much detail Map Maker users have added to Google Maps for these regions (as well as some time-lapse videos):

And the Reds vice-captain is realistic about the club's objectives this season, but believes the title is not beyond the reach of his side.

What Is The Thinking Of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence Agency

Photo: Lt. Gen. Hamid Gul

The ISI Threat in Pakistan Is Serious -- Max Boot, Commentary

Pakistani military leaders play a good double game, assuring the West of their eternal allegiance while at the same time sponsoring terrorist groups such as the Haqqani network which attacked the U.S. embassy in Kabul. But the mask often slips. To get a true sense of the thinking of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence Agency–which has emerged as one of the two biggest state sponsors of terrorism in the world (its only rival is the Iranian Revolutionary Guard)–just read these recent interviews with its former director, retired Lt. Gen. Hamid Gul, who is known for his close links to the Taliban and the Haqqani network, among other terrorist groups. As translated by the invaluable MEMRI, here is some of what Gul had to say:

"The goals that the U.S. wants to achieve are not in Pa [...]

A brief history of "Shame" signs on Madison's Capitol Square.

This year, we've seen lots of anti-Scott Walker protesters carrying signs that feature the word "Shame." (We've also heard the word "shame" chanted over and over again.) There's this guy, from last March, carrying a commercially printed "Shame" sign:

DSC_0004
From "Shame, shame, shame. Where is the shame?"

But a discussion a couple posts ago — about the Westboro Church folk coming to Madison — had me looking back to an old post of mine from 2004, when some religious group showed up at a Gay Pride parade. I was struck by this "shame" sign...

7/18/04 Madison Gay Pride Parade

... and I wonder what it says about the protesters of 2011 that they are channeling old-time religion.
