TV news channel editors too blast PCI chief

On the heels of the Editors’ Guild of India*, the Broadcast Editors' Association—the apex body of editors of national and regional television news channels—has slammed Press Council chairman Markandey Katju‘s remarks on the media in recent interviews and interactions.

Below is the full text of the BEA statement issued in the name of its president Shazi Zaman and general secretary N.K. Singh:

“The Broadcast Editors' Association (BEA) strongly condemns the irresponsible and negative comments by the new Press Council of India (PCI) Chairman Justice Markandey Katju against the media and media professionals, ever since he assumed charge. Coming from a person holding an august office, the utterances are extremely disappointing.

“In a democracy, criticism is welcome against institutions by individuals and representatives of institutions. It gives a fillip to self-corrective process. The BEA believes in inviting public criticism against itself and in taking, after evaluating such comments, the required corrective steps. But the criticism being made by Justice Katju is as demeaning and denigrating as it is a manifestation of his ignorance of media working. Any criticism made in a holier-than-thou fervor defeats the very purpose it is sought to be made for.

“The new chairman should know that the electronic media has taken a giant step in creating a self-regulatory mechanism under the chairmanship of eminent jurist and former Supreme Court Chief Justice J.S. Verma.

“Justice Katju accuses media of dividing people on communal lines and hence being anti-people. The sane and balanced coverage of two recent incidents— Ayodhya Judgment and Gopalgarh Riots— belies the assertion of the PCI Chairman. Taking recourse to logical fallacy, he accuses media o [...]

Anandi convinces Suguna not to let Varun-Jagya's relationship be affected due to their problems. Varun insists that he wants to talk to Jagya. Anandi calls Jagya and makes him talk to Varun. Everyone is emotional.

At night, Anandi finishes some schoolwork, she remembers some childhood memories of hiding under the bed with Jagya and studying with him. She smiles at first and then remembers the changed Jagya and feels bad.

In the morning, Gehna makes Nandu ready for school. Anandi comes down with a bag and Sumitra asks her about it. Anandi says she is donating some of her clothes to laborers in the village. She leaves.

Bhairon is in the godown when Phooli calls and tells him that she is trying to reach Anandi but she isn't answering the phone and no one seems to be at home. Bhairon promises to have Anandi call her back.

At night, B&B come back home and Bhairav asks for Anandi. Gehna comes there and tells them that Anandi has not yet returned. Sumitra looks worried. They try to reach her on her cell phone but it is unreachable. Gehna says that Anandi would have called in case she was late. B&B and Sumitra go to Anandi's school and see that its locked. They are shocked. They go to Gulli's house and Gulli tells them that Anandi never came to school (Gulli looks guilty somehow).

The video below shows this officer moving down the police line where Marine Scott Olsen was shot. The unidentified officer is holding a riot shotgun that could shoot rubber bullets or bean bags. In the video below, Veterans for Peace Navy seaman Joshua Shepherd stands before police with Veterans for Peace flag and Constitution. Video shows numerous officers on the far end firing projectiles from riot shotguns in area where Olsen was just shot with a projectile.
The majority of the officers in that area were from San Francisco Sheriff ESU.
