Editors’ Guild takes on Press Council chief

The Editors’ Guild of India* has responded to the remarks made by the chairman of the Press Council of India, Justice Markandey Katju, in recent interviews and interactions with the media.

Below is the full text of the editors’ guild response:

“The Editors’ Guild of India deplores the ill-considered, sweeping and uninformed comments on the media and on media professionals by the new chairman of the Press Council of India, Justice Markandey Katju. Mr Katju has been making negative statements on the media ever since he assumed office, but his comments in an interview to Karan Thapar on CNN-IBN, broadcast over the week-end, touched a new low.

“The Guild notes that Mr Katju thinks the media divides people on religious lines and is anti-people. He objects to TV channels that focus on cricket and other subjects that he disapproves of. He believes that journalists have not studied economics, politics, literature or philosophy, and he has a poor opinion of the media and media people (some of whom, as it happens, are members of the Press Council that Mr Katju chairs).

“The Guild notes that Mr Katju, after expressing such sweeping negative sentiments, has asked the government for draconian powers to impose fines on the media, to withdraw advertisements and to suspend the licence to publish or broadcast. The Guild strongly opposes such powers being given to the Council, especially a Council led by someone who it would seem wants to invoke "fear" in the media.

“The Guild wishes to draw attention to the fact that its attempt to engage in dialogue with Mr Katju has been rendered futile by Mr Kat [...]

Rajbeer takes Preeto his grandmum's old shop, so that Preeto can open her own boutique there. Preeto tells him that their realtionship has to end there, as she has alot of resposibilites towards her family.

Detailed

Preeto notices Ishu and Meeta are quite upset about yesterday, and decide to lighten the mood. She tries to cheer them up by reminding them it's Diwali today, and how they should celebrate it. Meeta and Ishu try to tell her that maybe they shouldn't celebrate too much this year after what happened to their father. Preeto explains how he wants to see all of them happy, and that's why they should celebrate Diwali to make him happy. Preeto takes her tiffin and leaves.

She goes outside to see Rajbeer waiting for her. He talks very casually to her but notices that Preeto's not being herself. He asks her if there's anything wrong, and if she's feeling okay. She tells him everything's fine. He then tells her he has a surprise for her and to go with him. She tries to say that she should go to the base camp as she didn't go there yesterday and took a half day's leave the day before, but he assures her she'll reach on time. She further tries to tell him she doesn't feel like being surprised and has to talk to him about something, but he pulls her along.

While they're in the car, Rajbeer again asks her why she's looking so lost. She tells him she didn't sleep that well. He adds that she probably didn't have breakfast either, as he's seen in movies that people in love tend to forget those stuff. A Google search returns 35,400 results the day after Politico drops its story about 2 female employees who, years ago, were angered and upset by what they said was "sexually suggestive behavior" by Herman Cain.

Let's listen to the original use of the phrase "high-tech lynching." It was just about exactly 20 years ago that Clarence Thomas, nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court by George H. W. Bush, faced the Senate Judiciary Committee, which, under the watch of Senator Joe Biden, heard testimony accusing him of sexual harassment.
