The Sikhs celebrate Guru Nanak Jayanti as the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Guru Nanak Jayanti - extensively celebrated as Gurpurab across India and the world - is one of the several auspicious religious festivals in Sikhism observed to commemorate and remember the birth and philosophy of Guru Nanak, first Sikh Guru and founder of Sikhism. Guru Nanak Dev's birthday is known to Sikhs as Guru Nanak Dev's prakash, or the dawn of spiritual light.
The founder of the faith- is an occasion for great rejoicing. Guru Nanak was born in 1469 AD at Tolevandi (near Lahore). When converted to the modern Gregorian calendar, Guru Nanak Dev's birth or prakash occurred April 14, 1469 A.D.Gurpurab actually refers to the anniversary festivities that revolve around the lives of 10 Sikh Gurus to mark the significant contributions towards Sikhism.
